Fall Update! November 30, 2025

As we approach fall and temperatures start to cool down, the Shroud continues to be hot news. During the St. Louis international conference held on July 30-Aug 3, news broke that an author named Cicero Moreas claimed that the Shroud was allegedly not laid over a body but over a bas-relief sculpture. The Shroud of Turin Research Project had proved in the late 1970s and early 1980s that wasn't the case but the media ran with the story. There were numerous critiques of this, many of which you will find in the “Recently Published Papers and Articles” section in this update.

The St. Louis event was organized by Shroud Educational Endeavors Corporation. About 425 people took part in the conference and speakers and attendees came from the United States, Italy, Spain, France, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, England Ireland, Norway and Finland. Some presenters, including one from Australia, were unable to attend in person and sent a video presentation instead.

In early September, another story was published that claimed historian Nicolas Sarzeaud, a researcher in the Université Catholique of Louvain, presented a passage he attributed to the philosopher Nicole Oresme around 1370 as the earliest written mention of the Shroud and argued that Oresme cited it as a patent example of clerical fraud, which convinces Sarzeaud that the Shroud is a fake. As with the Moreas article, there were numerous critiques of the Sarzeaud claim, some of which can also be found in the “Recently Published Papers and Articles” section.

On the pro-authenticity side, articles started coming out as a dental surgeon asserted that he could see images of teeth on the facial image of the Shroud.a dental surgeon asserted that he could see images of teeth on the facial image of the Shroud. Others have claimed the same thing in the past. Needless to say, there are many critics of this idea.

In this update we are also reproducing three previously-unpublished articles by the late ecclesiastical artist, Isabel Piczek (who also was knowledgeable in physics), written between 1987-1989. Also, we link to two recently published papers by the Italian scientist Giovanni Fazio.

As usual, we bring you plenty of papers, articles, books, videos and audios to read, watch and listen to.

Here is the Updated Table of Contents:

The Face Of Jesus Christ: My Investigation of the Shroud of Turin (History Cold Files Book 2) by William Thompson

Here is the online description:

“In a climate-controlled case in Turin's Cathedral rests a fourteen-foot linen cloth bearing the faint image of a crucified man. According to Christian tradition, this is the burial shroud of Jesus Christ. There's just one problem. In 1988, three laboratories performed radiocarbon dating on the shroud. Oxford, Arizona, and Zurich. The results were conclusive: the linen was manufactured between 1260 and 1390 AD - a thousand years too late to have wrapped Christ. Case closed. Medieval forgery exposed by modern science.

Except for what forty American scientists discovered. Ten years earlier, the Shroud of Turin Research Project spent 120 continuous hours examining the cloth with five tons of equipment. Physicists from Los Alamos. Chemists from major universities. Imaging specialists from NASA. Their unanimous conclusion: the image is not painted. No pigments. No brushstrokes. The discoloration exists only on the outermost 200 nanometers of surface fibers -thinner than a wavelength of light. It's a photographic negative created five centuries before photography existed. And the bloodstains are real human blood with chemistry consistent with severe torture. How could a medieval forger create properties that modern lasers operating at 34 trillion watts can barely reproduce?”

Shadows of Faith and Reason: The Shroud of Turin and the Quest for Truth by Michael Paulson

    Here is the online description:

“What if the world's most mysterious relic was never meant to provide certainty, but to challenge belief itself? What if the Shroud of Turin - revered by millions as Christ's burial cloth, dismissed by others as a medieval forgery - was more than a religious artifact, but a mirror reflecting our deepest struggles with truth and doubt? And what if one forgotten philosopher, writing centuries ago, held the key to understanding it all?

For over six hundred years, the Shroud of Turin has inspired pilgrims, confounded scientists, and divided historians. In Shadows of Faith and Reason, you'll step inside a story that is part history, part mystery, and part meditation on what it means to believe. From medieval Champagne to the royal courts of France, from papal decrees to modern laboratories, this book traces the extraordinary journey of the Shroud - and the equally extraordinary debates it has ignited.Through the rediscovery of Nicole Oresme's overlooked writings in 2025, we learn that skepticism about the Shroud is not a modern invention but part of its DNA from the very beginning.”

    Here is the online description:

Fu mai in pericolo?

Gesù e la sindone by Pierluigi Baima Bollone

    Here is the online description:

Below is the one paragraph summary I wrote on the pollen evidence. I didn't include the various references to Gundelia tournefortii and others in dispute since that falls under the general topic of Frei's misidentifications at species level.

“Modern studies of the Shroud have revealed features that indicate an origin in the Middle East. Most notable was the initial pollen analysis conducted in 1973 and 1978 by Swiss criminologist Max Frei (Frei 1982). He had worked on pollen for his phD and was struck by the presence on the Shroud of types he had not encountered either in the field (Sardinia, Sicily) or in reference collections for Europe. Many of his identifications have since been discounted, especially those down to species level without SEM confirmation. However, new sample identifications using SEM (Lucotte 2015) provided firm evidence of plants prominent in the Near East, most notable among them Balanites aegyptiaca (the palm tree of the desert). According to Kew (website): “The native range of this species is Africa, Israel to Arabian Peninsula. It is a tree and grows primarily in the desert or dry shrubland biome.” Further, re-appraisal of certain specimens reported by Frei have indicated to some researchers an Eastern Mediterranean origin and presence in funerary ointments (Boi 2016).”

Email from Larry Stalley - October 10, 2025: Academia CEO Reviews “Sign of Jonah” Shroud Paper
    by Larry Stalley

    Dear Shroud Researchers and friends,

Romans 12:15 exhorts us to “Rejoice with those who rejoice” - and I have reason to rejoice! Last week, I uploaded a revised draft of my paper, Why the Image on the Shroud Is “the Sign of Jonah”, and the CEO of Academia.edu offered a brief, neutral audio review. He described the paper as “thought-provoking” and “fascinating,” and encouraged others to read and reflect on it.

Listen to the six-minute podcast: Academia.edu Podcast

    Why This Paper Matters

The paper presents a bold thesis: that the image on the Shroud of Turin fulfills Jesus' prophecy regarding “the sign of Jonah” (Mt 12:40), and that this sign appeared during the apostolic era. The key insight lies in understanding the metaphor of a twofold captivity:

  • Jonah was enclosed within the belly of the great fish, itself within the sea.

  • Jesus was enclosed within the burial Shroud, itself within the tomb.

  • This typological comparison reveals that “the heart of the earth” refers not merely to the tomb, but to the Shroud itself - the inner sphere of captivity. At the end of the prophetic timeline, Peter and John found the burial linens without a body (Jn 20:7-12). Did they also find an image on the Shroud which could have been interpreted as the very “sign from heaven” (Mt 16:1) Jesus foretold, thus unlocking the biblical riddle? Does Matthew's reluctance to explain the metaphor suggest that the Shroud's image was a guarded miraculous sign in the early Church?

If the exegesis is correct, the image is not just evidence of the Resurrection - it is biblical testimony to the Shroud's authenticity.

    A Syllogism

Major Premise: Jesus predicted a miraculous “sign from heaven” (Mt 16:1) that would appear at the end of a three-day timeline, typologically linked to His burial Shroud and Jonah's captivity in the belly of the sea creature (Mt 12:40).

Minor Premise: The Shroud of Turin bears a visible, inexplicable, and irreproducible image of a crucified man that aligns perfectly with the biblical narrative.

Conclusion: Therefore, the image on the Shroud is most plausibly the “sign of Jonah” that Jesus predicted - a divine testimony to His captivity and deliverance ... and unjust execution.

    Final Thoughts

For Shroud authenticists, this is a gold nugget. The Bible itself offers compelling support for the Shroud's divine origin-independent of scientific or historical validation.

If you appreciate the CEO's review, feel free to leave him (Richard Price) a comment of thanks. And please, let's protect this moment of affirmation - avoid sharing the podcast with skeptics who may seek to undermine it and get it removed.

    Warm regards,

    Larry Stalley

P.S. For engaging critics, here are seven key questions to challenge their assumptions:

    1. Was Jonah captive within two spheres - the sea and the belly of the fish?

    2. Was Jesus likewise captive within two spheres - the tomb and the burial Shroud?

    3. Where exactly was Jesus during the “three days and three nights”? What was He “in”?

    4. What is the intent of this metaphor between Jonah and Jesus if it is not meant to parallel their “captivity and deliverance”?

    5. What exactly was “the sign of Jonah”?

    6. What contradicts the Shroud's image from being a “sign”? What contradicts it from being “the sign of Jonah”?

    7. If the allegory is incorrect, how and why?

    Taking New Opportunities

Shroud Ambassador Nan Balfour presented at the Shroud of Turin International Conference and Symposium which was hosted at the Augustine Institute in Colorado. What an honor for PCH to have participated in this prestigious event, connecting with Shroud experts and project leaders from around the world.

Shroud Ambassador and Pilgrim Center of Hope Co-Founder & Co-Director Mary Jane Fox presented at the annual investiture weekend for the Southwestern Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem -- one of the largest lieutenancies in the world of the Vatican-affiliated organization. Fox's presentation followed that of Dr. Wayne Phillips, a member of the Shroud Science Group, who has conducted research on pollen data from the Shroud. Fox herself is a member of the Equestrian Order, holding the rank of Dame Commander.

Pilgrim Center of Hope is now listed on VisitSanAntonio.com -- a result of our new status as a Strategic Partner of Visit San Antonio! This will help more visitors find the permanent Who Is the Man of the Shroud? Exhibition at the Center, and also reflects the many actions of our staff and board to create a wide, strong foundation for Pilgrim Center of Hope (PCH)'s future.

Scientific Analysis of the Moraes-CISS Exchange on the Shroud of Turin

    Situation

In July 2025, a study by Cicero Moraes1 proposed a bas-relief contact hypothesis for the image formation on the Shroud of Turin. The International Center for Shroud Studies (CISS) issued a press release2 critiquing this hypothesis, which was endorsed by the Pontifical Custodian of the Shroud3. Moraes responded with a public defense4 of his work. This analysis evaluates the exchange against a comprehensive framework of empirical constraints5 required for any credible Shroud image formation mechanism.

    Core Of The Dispute

  • Moraes' Claim: Digital 3D simulations show a bas-relief contact mechanism produces less image distortion ("Mask of Agamemnon effect") than a full 3D body

  • CISS Counter: 1) This orthogonal projection finding isn't new6 2) Physical-chemical evidence rules out painting/scorching mechanisms7 3) Digital simulations cannot override material science evidence

  • Moraes' Defense: 1) Novelty lies in methodology and historical context 2) STuRP studies didn't definitively exclude pigments7 3) His tools have scientific validity

  • Analysis Against Empirical Constraints

Email from sindonologist Tom Dallis - August 13, 2025: Dallis was an attendee of the recent St. Louis conference. He wrote, I wanted to share something I've been working on that I think you'll enjoy. I've started a short video series called Drawn to the Shroud. They're only 3-4 minutes each, in 9:16 format, so they work perfectly on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, X, and other social media.

I created them through Instadoodle, where I have a creative license. That means they're a mix of drawings and photos - not interviews - and they're professionally narrated with music in the background to keep them engaging and easy to follow.

Right now, there are 4 episodes up, and I'm planning to have 40 by the end of the year. My hope is to make the Shroud accessible to people who may not know much about it - quick, clear, and shareable. Episode 4 even tackles the recent bas-relief theory (basically a recycled old idea the anti-Shroud folks are holding onto).

    Summer Update! August 22, 2025

It's hard to believe that more than one year has passed since we lost Barrie Schwortz. But no matter how much time passes, he will never be forgotten.

As the weather has heated in many places around the globe, so have Shroud activities.

Two major Shroud conferences were held in the summer of 2025. The first one was held in Australia, in the diocese of Sydney on June 27-28. It was very well attended, attracting about 300 attendees. The organizers sent a short report that we will share.

The second one was held in St. Louis, Missouri at the newly-relocated Augustine Institute. It was also well attended with about 200 attendees for the full conference and another 225 for the St. Louis-vicinity people attending the “Day-Pass” sessions on July 31 and August 1-2. The conference had about 50 speakers giving presentations to 2 academic tracks and the Day-Pass track.

A new edition of the Italian and English language journal “Sindon” is now available.

As promised in the spring Update, this summer update reproduces several older conference papers never previously published, one each by textile experts the late Lila Gatlin from the U.S. and the late Shelia Landi of the U.K. and one by the late archaeologist Paul Maloney. The Cardamone and Landi presentations were given at a conference held at Columbia University in New York in March 1991. The Maloney presentation was given at a conference held at St. Louis University in June 1991. Also reproduced in this update is the C-14 testing proposal submitted by The Association of Scientists and Scholars International for the Shroud of Turin (ASSIST), of which Maloney was the General Projects Director. The proposal was not accepted by the Vatican, but it is an important historical document.

We have also reproduced several other important historical documents: audio and video interviews of important Shroud researchers Kevin Moran, Ray Rogers, Larry Schwalbe and Bob Villarreal, all now deceased. Kevin Moran was an optical engineer who owned a VP-8 image analyzer, which was the main impetus behind the formation of the Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP). Kevin was not a member of STURP but worked very closely with some of the group's members. Ray Rogers was head of chemistry section of the STURP team. Larry Schwalbe was a physicist with STURP. Bob Villarreal was a chemist at Los Alamos National Laboratories. Rogers had given some of the “Raes” samples, excised in 1973 and which were right next to the C-14 sample taken in 1988 to Villarreal, who then shared them with 8 other scientists at LANL. There are videos of the [Moran], Rogers, and Schwalbe interviews and audios of the Moran and Villarreal interviews.

    Removing Barriers To The Shroud

Last Friday at 3:00pm, Julie, who is blind and at the tail-end of a long cancer battle, visited Pilgrim Center of Hope for the first time. We helped her experience the “Who Is the Man of the Shroud? exhibition through a narrative audio recording produced by our staff. She and her husband were grateful and impressed by their visit.

A few weeks prior, Alicia and Mary, who were in San Antonio for a Deaf retreat, experienced the exhibition thanks to our staff member Angela Dawn, who is fluent in American Sign Language.

Did you know we also provide a specialized, quarterly presentation on the Shroud of Turin at Bexar County Jail?

Removing barriers to the impactful story of the Shroud is only possible thanks to donations from visitors and supporters of Pilgrim Center of Hope. Thank you!

We have plans to continue and expand this work, but ongoing support is needed.

Shroud Ambassador Nan Balfour is set to present a special Journey with the Shroud alongside Mary Jane Fox, Co-Founder and Co-Director of Pilgrim Center of Hope, at the 2025 Cathollic Women's Conference in San Antonio on July 26.

Both Nan and Mary Jane have studied in the post-graduate certificate program on the Shroud of Turin from the Science and Faith Institute of the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum of Rome.

    Spring Update! May 17, 2025

As I write this, it's been a little over a year since Barrie started to get weaker from the illness that would eventually take his life on June 21, 2024. Warrior that he was, he was doing STERA business up until the time of his death, after faithfully keeping it up for 28 years.

I think about him all the time as I go about the work of doing these periodic updates. He was such an important part of the Shroud world, and I still have a hard comprehending that he's no longer with us.

We begin with an update about the International conference to be held in St. Louis, Missouri at the end of July and beginning of August.

One of the previous conferences, held in Frascati in 2010 and organized by our friend Paolo Di Lazzaro, has shut down its website but has arranged for access to the Proceedings to be found on another site.

French molecular anthropologist Dr. Gérard Lucotte notified me of seven papers he wrote or co-wrote between 2006 and 2024 not previously noted, so we have provided access to all of those.

In the STERA archives, I found three unpublished articles by the late STURP chemist, Ray Rogers from the 2001-2003 period. They are reproduced in full here.

We also have the usual large number of new books, articles and various other news pertaining to the magnificent linen cloth that goes by many names, but often just as, “The Shroud.”

Turin Shroud: Comprehensive Impossibility For A Work Of Art
    by Giulio Fanti

    • Turin Shroud: Comprehensive Impossibility For A Work Of Art by Giulio Fanti - (Open Access) - Medical & Clinical Case Reports Journal, 2025, 3(1):1-10. Abstract: This study builds upon previous research that has demonstrated the hypothesis suggesting the Turin Shroud (TS), also referred to as the Holy Shroud, is a medieval artistic production to be medically implausible.

Beyond the medical considerations, the TS exhibits a double-body image imprint. This phenomenon remains unexplained in its entirety and has not been successfully reproduced in a laboratory setting, even with the most advanced and sophisticated modern techniques.

This research extends the critical analysis of this hypothesis, which continues to be widely disseminated in popular media, by examining the technical and procedural challenges a Hypothetical Artist (HA) would have faced in attempting to produce the observed double-body image on the TS.

This study's primary motivation stems from the author's extensive research on the TS, spanning more than twenty-five years of university-level scientific investigation. Based on this research, the author asserts the authenticity of the TS, as the body of supporting evidence is substantial, while no verifiable data has been identified that would suggest otherwise.

Following a summary of the medical procedures theoretically required for an artist to produce such an imprint, this study further examines, with experimental results too, the even more complex and implausible technical operations that a hypothetical artist would have needed to undertake to produce the TS's double-body image-an outcome that remains, even with modern scientific advancements, effectively “impossible” to replicate.

Divine Testimony for the Resurrection: Hidden References to the Holy Shroud in the Bible by Larry Stalley

    Here is the online description:

“Is the Shroud of Turin the actual burial cloth that once wrapped the corpse of Jesus? If it is, why were the Gospel writers silent about its mysterious, full-body image? Might there actually be cryptic references to the image within the New Testament that have gone unnoticed until now? And if there are such references, why are they cryptic? What has science discovered about the image on the Shroud? And are there historical references or artifacts associated with the Shroud outside the biblical canon from the period of the early Church? Those important and intriguing questions are addressed by this book. The significance of this work is monumental, both with regard to New Testament studies and with regard to our understanding of the Shroud of Turin! The book‘s focus ‐ that hidden or cryptic statements concerning the Shroud and its incredible image actually exist within the Bible ‐ is a game changer with respect to (1) "the quest for the historical Jesus," (2) the existence of biblical evidence supporting the authenticity of the Turin Shroud, and (3) the believer‘s assurance of personal resurrection and eternal life!”

El Rostro: La Controversia Llevada Al Teatro by Joe F. Daniels

    Here is the online description:

Contemplare la Sindone by Emanuela Marinelli and Domenico Repice

    Here is the online description:

    Turin Shroud by James Carter

    Here is the online description:

“‘Turin Shroud’ explores the captivating mystery of the Shroud of Turin, a linen cloth bearing the faint image of a man that some believe to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. The book delves into the shroud's documented history, primarily tracing back to 14th‐century France, while investigating claims of even earlier origins. It also examines the controversial 1988 radiocarbon dating results, which suggested a medieval origin, and presents critiques and alternative dating methodologies. Interestingly, the image on the shroud defies easy explanation, inviting debate about whether it could have been produced using medieval techniques or if it points to a more extraordinary origin. This comprehensive analysis covers key aspects such as the historical context, scientific dating, and image analysis. Textile analysis, including weave patterns and fiber composition, provides additional clues. The book evaluates various theories of image formation, considering artistic techniques, scorch hypotheses, and spectroscopic studies. By presenting published scientific papers, historical documents, and expert opinions, the book balances scientific rigor with accessibility. It progresses logically, guiding readers from the shroud's history to dating controversies, textile analysis, image formation theories, and religious implications, encouraging critical assessment of the evidence. ”

Cloths of the Crucifixion by Jim Russo

    Here is the online description:

“This book provides a structured approach examining the Shroud of Turin and the Sudarium of Oviedo from historical, scientific, and theological perspectives, leading to the conclusion that both relics covered the same crucified body of a first-century individual from Jerusalem. The Shroud of Turin is a linen cloth that bears the image of a man who appears to have suffered physical trauma in a manner consistent with crucifixion. It has been a subject of intense debate and research for many years, with some claiming it to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. As with any relic associated with religious significance, perspectives on the Sudarium of Oviedo can vary widely. Believers often view it as a sacred and authentic artifact, while skeptics may question the historical reliability and scientific basis for such claims. It's important to approach these matters with a critical and open-minded perspective considering historical, religious, and scientific considerations.”

A Saga Desconhecida do Santo Sudário de Cristo e de Sua Igreja (vol. 1 ou 2) por Jack Brandão

Here is the online description for vol. 2:

News from the National Shroud of Turin Exhibit ‐ April 22, 2025

    News from SignFromGod.org ‐ April 20, 2025

Happy Easter! We prefer to call it “Resurrection Sunday,” because today our Lord Jesus Christ declared victory over death and was resurrected to life. During that miraculous process, wrapped in his burial shroud, the life‐sized, front‐to‐back mirror image was formed.

Today, that image is known as the Shroud of Turin. Read what the Gospel of John says about its discovery. So, Happy Birthday to the Shroud!

We believe, as do millions of people worldwide, that this mysterious Shroud exists today, housed at St. John the Baptist Cathedral in Turin, Italy, since 1578.

That is why the future National Shroud of Turin Exhibit in Washington, D.C., is named the “World's Greatest Mystery.” Our team of Shroud experts is working to attract partners to make this permanent exhibit a reality in the world's most powerful and influential city.

You can help bring this memorable exhibit to life. We have started a waiting list for patrons interested in owning “Emergence!” The Shroud of Turin‐inspired bronze sculpture of Jesus “emerging” from his burial shroud is nearing completion, created by our team member, world‐renowned sculptor Timothy Schmalz.

“World-renowned” since Timothy has two large sculptures on permanent display in the Vatican's St. Peter's Square. His first sculpture, installed in 2019, marked the Square's first new sculpture in 400 years. Then, on April 15, his second sculpture began inspiring millions of visitors.

“Emergence!” is shown below as an eight‐inch unfinished prototype. But soon, “Emergence!” will be unveiled and offered in various sizes, up to 20 feet high.

    Emergence!

Work in progress! “Emergence!” will soon be offered to our patrons. Join our waiting list.

Shown below is a Shroud of Turin hologram. What Jesus likely looked like a nanosecond before resurrection:

    Shroud of Turin hologram

At the National Shroud of Turin Exhibit, we believe Almighty God wants you to learn about the Shroud of Turin and understand that the torturous marks seen on the crucified man mirror the Gospel accounts of what Jesus endured for your sake. Then, armed with knowledge, you decide if the cloth is the authentic burial Shroud of Jesus Christ, in whom you can place your faith, hope, and trust.

That is why we need your help to produce a permanent Shroud of Turin exhibit in Washington, D.C., titled “The World's Greatest Mystery.” With your tax‐deductible donation, we will enlighten, engage, impact, educate, and inspire visitors.

Happy Easter and Resurrection Sunday! Happy Birthday to the Shroud of Turin!

    Our Next Update

Our next update will likely be in September. You can expect two papers from the 1991 Shroud conference held at Columbia University and one paper from the 1991 conference held in St. Louis that was not published in the Proceedings. Also, I plan to publish the C-14 proposal by the Association of Scientists and Scholars International for the Shroud of Turin (ASSIST) for that had been submitted but rejected for the 1988 testing.

As I've mentioned before, 2025 promises to be a banner year for the Shroud. We're sure to have a lot of exciting news, books, papers, videos and also the St. Louis conference to report on.

You can also join our Website Mailing List and receive an e-mail whenever the site is updated (3 or 4 times per year) or when any important Shroud news breaks. Note that mailing list subscribers have access to special offers not available to the general public. If you are already a subscriber but have changed your e-mail address recently, please remember that we are a self-subscribed mailing list and you have to update your e-mail address or you will stop receiving our quarterly updates. This is easily accomplished by clicking on the Update Profile link at the bottom of every e-mail we send. And finally, thank you for your dedicated patronage and support of STERA, Inc. Winter Update! February 5, 2025

As the calendar turned to 2025, the passing of Barrie Schwortz in June of 2024 was still fresh in our minds. However, it is gratifying to know that his influence will continue long into the future.

Frenetic Shroud activities continue and promise to do so throughout the year. Various books, including by Mark Antonacci, Dr. John Jackson, et al., Theodora Pappas, Larry Stalley (over 600 pages!), Dr. Cheryl White, and Ian Wilson, are expected during 2025. Dr. White was scheduled to give a Shroud presentation at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. on January 23. Progress continues to be made establishing the National Shroud of Turin Exhibit, also based in Washington, D.C. The “Who is the Man of Shroud” exhibit will travel extensively throughout the U.S. from March through August, including at a Shroud conference. Trinity Broadcasting Network is planning a theatrical film release about the Shroud at Eastertime. Turin is planning an actual exhibition of the Shroud, but only to the youth of the dioceses of Turin and Susa. It's possible that there will be an accompanying virtual showing. There will be a major international Shroud conference to be held in St. Louis, Missouri at the end of July and the beginning of August.

Meanwhile, the flood of new videos keeps coming. Much interest was generated in January by a discussion between the most popular podcaster, Joe Rogan and Mel Gibson, who soon will come out with “The Passion of the Christ: the Resurrection.” Rogan and Gibson discussed the Shroud, which spurred other podcasters to do shows commenting on Rogan's and Gibson's comments about the Shroud! Such media interest in the Shroud has not been this intense since the late 1970s and early 1980s when the Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP), which studied the Shroud for 120 hours straight, analyzed their data for about 3 years and ultimately concluded that the Shroud was not the product of an artist.

As I mentioned previously, when I took over as editor of shroud.com, I was sending out a weekly email posting about the latest Shroud news, books, articles, videos, etc. I still send out these weekly postings, so if you would like to be added to the list, send me an email at JMarino240@aol.com. Everyone on the list is blind-copied, and one can request at any time to be removed from the list. It's a good way to keep with the latest on the Shroud happenings between the periodic shroud.com updates.

We lead off this update with the latest information regarding the conference to be held in St. Louis, Missouri to be held in late July/early August. The venue has been changed to the beautiful grounds and complex of the Augustine Institute, which only recently moved to the St. Louis area. It will provide a more spiritual backdrop for the conference.

A new issue of the journal “Sindon,” published by Centro Internazionale di Studi Sindone (CISS) has been published. It is in both Italian and English, and always provides fascinating and insightful analysis into the Shroud. Also, additional issues of the Italian journal Collagamento Pro Sindone have been added their page and the same for the British Society for the Turin Shroud Newsletter.

We also have the usual large number of new books, articles and various other news pertaining to the magnificent linen cloth that goes by many names, but often just as, “The Shroud.”

Here is the Update Table of Contents:

    • Beyond Imagination: Evidence of Rigor Mortis and Cadaveric Spasm on the Shroud of Turin by Theodora A. Pappas - (Open Access) - Medical & Clinical Case Reports Journal, 2025, 2(4):1-14. Abstract: “This paper will examine how inconspicuous details in the body images on the Shroud of Turin indicate that a crucified man is depicted who is in a state of cadaveric spasm and rigor mortis. Moreover, the precise positioning of the body indicates that death, cadaveric spasm, and rigor mortis all occurred while the man was still nailed upright to a cross with his arms stretched outward and at an upward angle. Additionally, since the Shroud is said to be the burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth, evidence is presented that proves that, in general, rigor mortis and cadaveric spasm are capable of being sustained for 39 hours (the approximate maximum amount of time that Jesus was dead according to the Gospels) or longer.”

    • Recently Published Papers & Articles - Winter 2025 - This is a link to a single pdf document file that includes links to all of the papers and articles featured in today's update. You can either read it now or simply download the pdf file and review the links and materials at your leisure.

The Divine Selfie: A Crash Course on the Jesus Shroud of Turin by Mike S. King

    Here is the online description:

“The mysterious Shroud of Turin continues to captivate secular scientists and historians as much as it does Christian believers. Is it an authentic 2000-year-old Jerusalem “selfie” of Jesus Christ proving the Resurrection? Or is it an elaborate medieval forgery which the best forensic scientists in the world and all of their instruments still cannot even begin to explain? Though now proven to be about 2000 years old - it has only been less than 50 years that forensic studies have sought to unravel the seemingly unsolvable riddle of the Shroud - a relic which has by now undergone more rigorous scientific testing than any other item in history.”

The Shroud of Turin: Faith Meets Mystery by Maurice Dunlap

“This captivating book explores the fascinating intersection of natural disasters, faith, and the enigmatic Shroud of Turin. It delves into the historical claims surrounding this revered relic, examining its physical characteristics and the scientific investigations that have sought to determine its authenticity. The text also delves into the biblical accounts of natural disasters, interpreting these events as both divine punishments and signs of hope. Through gripping narratives of the Lisbon Earthquake, the Great Fire of London, and the Umbria-Marche Earthquakes, the book explores the alleged miraculous survival of the Shroud during these catastrophic events. It further examines the psychological and emotional responses to natural disasters, highlighting the role of faith and spirituality in coping with loss and trauma. The book also explores the Shroud as a symbol of hope and resilience, offering solace and inspiration in times of crisis. It presents scientific investigations and controversies surrounding the Shroud's origin, as well as its impact on popular culture and religious traditions. Ultimately, the book examines the future of the Shroud and its potential role in promoting interfaith dialogue and environmental stewardship, while considering the impact of climate change and natural hazards on this enigmatic artifact.”

This book delves into the origins, history, and controversies surrounding the enigmatic cloth believed by many to bear the image of Jesus Christ. It examines scientific investigations, including carbon dating, forensic analysis, and imaging studies, as well as the Shroud's cultural and religious significance. THE SHROUD RISES: AS THE CARBON DATE IS BURIED by William West

    Here is the online description:

“In September 2024, headlines swept the world: a new test had dated the Shroud of Turin - the 'Shroud of Jesus Christ' - to the first century. At the same time, research confirmed the much-publicized carbon dating of the Shroud to the Middle Ages was fatally flawed. Other research added to the mountain of evidence for the Shroud's authenticity. There is now only one conclusion: there is no room for doubt that the Shroud is the burial cloth of Jesus. Thus begins William West's second book on the Shroud, which follows his first, widely acclaimed book, Riddles of the Shroud: Questions Science Can't Answer. This time around, West digs deeper into the carbon dating and discovers how it managed to get the date so wrong. William West has been a journalist and editor for 50 years. He spent almost two decades working on The Australian newspaper in many roles, including higher education editor and legal writer. He has been an editor of several magazines, including Perspective magazine and Education Review. His first book on the Shroud, Riddles of the Shroud: Questions Science Can't Answer, was an introduction to the scientific and historical research that have made the Shroud the most researched artifact in history. This book covers new discoveries that have changed the world's perspective on the Shroud of Jesus forever.”

One professor was so impacted that he has brought his extended family to the exhibition multiple times and keeps an image of the Shroud of Turin in his office so that visitors can ask him about it.

Shroud Ambassador Nan Balfour presented at the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis about the Shroud and Evangelization. While there, she spoke about the mission of Pilgrim Center of Hope.

    Shroud for Spanish Speakers

There is a great demand for Spanish translators of our Shroud of Turin presentations & materials. We have a Spanish-speaking volunteer Shroud Ambassador, however...

    • Our materials contain many medical and scientific concepts & terminology.
    • They also contain Scripture and theological meditations.

We have concluded that it is necessary to pay a professional translator to ensure the materials are faithful, acureate, and comprehensible for the average listener. Would you help fund this?

Email from signfromgod.org - - December 23, 2024 - The future National Shroud of Turin Exhibit ((NSTE) in Washington, D.C., will be known as the “World's Greatest Mystery.” Our team of Shroud experts is working to attract partners to make this permanent exhibit a reality in the world's most powerful and influential city.

Toward that goal, the NSTE had a breakthrough year with much media coverage. Among the highlights was our popular four-day Shroud exhibit at the National Eucharistic Congress in July. Touring the exhibit was Jonathan Roumie, the actor who plays Jesus in “The Chosen.”

Another highlight immediately followed February's National Catholic Prayer Breakfast. The NSTE held a press conference to announce the “USA's $1 Million Challenge to Replicate the Shroud.”

As expected, the entry deadline passed with no challengers since the Shroud has never been authentically replicated. In 1978, over 30 esteemed scientists concluded that the Shroud man's image “is not the product of an artist” after the most significant hands-on Shroud study ever conducted.

On to 2025! First, NSTE is proud to announce a partnership with internationally renowned sculptor Timothy Schmalz. He is creating a Shroud of Turin “Emergence” sculpture that is destined to be world-famous, as are his “Homeless Jesus” series and “Angels Unawares” - the life-sized immigrant boat sculpture prominently located in the Vatican's St. Peter's Square since 2019.

A cast of “Emergence” will be displayed at the NSTE's permanent home in downtown D.C. when the Lord reveals the location and your donations open the doors. You can help make this happen!

Second, NSTE and Franciscan University are exploring opportunities to collaborate and develop new engagements. The goal is to bring more people to an encounter with Jesus through the Shroud.

Our collaboration is timely because, in August, there was an unprecedented explosion of favorable Shroud news in the secular media. This “Shroud burst” amplified what was already a surge of interest attributed to the cloth's numerous mysterious properties, which fascinate scientists, believers, and non-believers.

At NSTE, we believe Almighty God wants you to learn about the Shroud of Turin and understand that the torturous marks seen on the crucified man mirror the Gospel accounts of what Jesus endured for your sake. Then, armed with knowledge, you decide if the cloth is the authentic burial Shroud of Jesus Christ, in whom you can place your faith, hope, and trust.

That is why we need your help to produce a permanent Shroud of Turin exhibit in Washington, D.C., titled “The World's Greatest Mystery.” With your tax-deductible donation, we will enlighten, engage, impact, educate, and inspire visitors.

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in His Name!
