Introduction
Welcome to the Shroud Spectrum International page of shroud.com, the exclusive online archive of the first and only peer reviewed journal dedicated solely to the study of the Shroud of Turin. We had the Index to Spectrum online since 1997, but the journals themselves were simply not available unless you were fortunate enough to have been a subscriber before they ended publication in 1993 or you purchased a printed set sometimes thereafter. In July of 2012 I wrote to Dorothy Crispino, editor and publisher of Spectrum, who I had last seen when I visited her at her home in Cavour, Italy in 2010. I knew she was in failing health due to her age (96 at the time) and asked her for permission to reprint all of Shroud Spectrum International here on shroud.com. She and I had worked together over many months in 1997 to put the index online, so I knew she understood the value of making the journals themselves available on the internet. Although it took some time before I received an answer, I finally heard from Dorothy's son Anthony Bercel, whose first response was very promising:
"I think the idea of placing Shroud Spectrum on the net is an excellent idea; the research my mother has invested into the Shroud would certainly have greater reach. In addition, having it available from your website, which already contains so much other Shroud material, would make sense particularly as you already have the Index. My mother is certainly warming up to the idea."
Anthony also brought me up to date on Dorothy's condition. Sadly, her vision had completely failed so she was no longer able to live on her own or answer e-mails and she had to move to an assisted living home. However, as Anthony put it, "aside from that, she is doing well for a 96 year old," so he was still able to discuss my request with her in detail. I am very proud to include here an excerpt from the kind response we received from Dorothy and Anthony a few days later:
"My mother will be happy to have you scan the issues of Shroud Spectrum International as long as your scanned version makes it clear that the material is being reproduced with her consent as holder of the copyright. Personally, I owe my thanks to you for placing her research on the internet; this ensures that it will never be lost and be of benefit to scholars today and into the future."
In January 2013, we started reprinting every page of every issue thanks to the extraordinary efforts of Stephen E. Jones, who lives in Western Australia and graciously volunteered to do all the scanning and optical character recognition and Ian Wilson, who provided Stephen with the original issues. So thanks to Dorothy and Anthony and Stephen and Ian, we have continued the work and now the entire 42 issue collection is archived in its entirety here on this website. Since many scholars over the years have used articles from Spectrum as references in their scientific and academic papers, we have retained all the original page numbers and page layouts so the online versions will remain consistent with the earlier printed references. Sadly, Dorothy passed away on August 16, 2014 at the age of 98 and you can see the memorial tribute to her at this link: In Memoriam. We begin with the message Dorothy wrote back in 1997 when we first published the Spectrum Index and which remains relevant to this day.
A Message from Dorothy Crispino
The first issue of Shroud Spectrum International appeared in December, 1981; the last, #42, was published in December, 1993. Spectrum was the only peer-reviewed journal in the world exclusively devoted to scientific/scholarly studies of the Shroud. Articles were by European and American authors of international repute, experts in various fields of sindonic research. As a rule, the lead article in each Spectrum was contributed by one of these researchers.
Spectrum aimed to give readers historical, medical, archeological and other scientific/scholarly information for establishing a background of issues in sindonology, without which current controversies are bound to cause confusion. Archival and documentary texts from past centuries are therefore a fundamental resource for a balanced perspective.
Each Spectrum included book reviews, news and activities from around the world, and other items.
Spectrum was created not so much by inspiration as by command. A year or so after the l978 Solemn Exposition of the Holy Shroud, I, Dorothy Crispino, returned to Turin to visit Don Piero Coero Borga, secretary of the Centro Internazionale di Sindonologia. The good don, the "Walking Dictionary of Sindonology", was lamenting the fact that so much European research, published primarily in Italian, French and German, was not reaching America. Concern fixing his face in a frown, Don Coero said. "There ought to be a journal published in the English language with translations of some of the major European research." I nodded answering, "Yes, there really should be." Don Coero glared at me. "And you," he said peremptorily, "are the one to do it."
That is how the journal started. I tried to follow Don Coero's directives, to bring solid sindonic information to all those, of many countries and languages, who could read English. Although Spectrum did not survive the carbon dating episode, these pages will endure, serving the cause for which they were written.
